In October of 1888 Steve O'Donnell left the employ of Messrs. J.L. Holmes and Co., printers, Sydney to take up residence in Melbourne. There was a proposed 6-round match between O'Donnell and Frank Slavin for November 6, 1888 Melbourne Cup night. There is some question as to exactly when O'Donnell turned pro.
In the Newcastle Morning Herald of October 31, 1891 there is mention of a charity event featuring both amateur and professional athletes and O'Donnell is included amongst the amateurs listed. In December of 1891 at a retirement party at Foley's Hall for an editor of The Referee, Mick Dooley sparred four rounds with Steve O'Donnell.
- Jan 12, 1892 O'Donnell sparred four rounds with Pat Kieley.
