George Siler was one of the most well-known and respected referees of "modern" boxing's early years. He refereed bouts featuring Joe Gans, Battling Nelson, and Jimmy Britt, among countless others.
Siler first wrote sports for the Chicago Times. Shortly before the John L. Sullivan vs. James J. Corbett bout, Siler became the sporting editor of the Chicago Globe. About two years later he started writing for the Chicago Tribune.
He had a heart attack when he was preparing to go to Milwaukee to cover the Stanley Ketchel vs. Billy Papke (1st meeting) bout for the Chicago Tribune, and died on June 13, 1908.
