In October of 1908 Turner fought Chewy Williams. According to local reports he had previously fought and beaten Jack Dewan (alias Murphy)KO 6 and Jack Sullivan (alias Ralph Wells)KO 1 at the same Goldfield A.C. in Kalgoorlie, fighting under the alias 'Long Jack Smith'. According to his manager W. Robertson, he also had beaten Jim Rafton KO 9 at Hobart, Court Oakes KO 6 at Queenston, and Jim Lynch KO 6 at Kalgoorlie, prior to the Williams fight.
Bill Turner and Billy McColl had signed articles to meet in a rematch at Hobart on January 11, 1911. The bills were printed up and the Theatre Royal hall booked when McColl backed out to fight Mike Williams. Ranji Burns was next to meet Turner but was forced to back out due to illness.
In March 1911 Turner was hospitalized at Sydney General for acute appendicitis. [Apparently, Turner was also a heavy smoker]
