Haack was a very important figure in early Memphis boxing, serving as the promoter/matchmaker, and often referee of many boxing shows held in Memphis. His son, Billy Haack, Jr. was also involved in the sport with his father, in similar capacities.

According to The News Scimitar of Memphis Haack had refereed 1500 bouts by July 30, 1919.

According to San Bernardino Sun, November 11, 1954 Haack began promoting and refereeing in 1908. He passed from a heart attack he had the previous Thursday.
