The writer of The Ring column for the Sydney Sportsman coined the phrase "The Baby Elephant" as a nickname for Sid Russell because of his habit of fighting in a crouch with his left arm crooked in front of him like an elephant's trunk and because of his bulk. When defending he used a cross-arm guard; when attacking he concentrated on his opponent's midsection, especially the kidney area, which was considered a legal target at the time.
At the time of his death, Russell (nee Reynolds), known as "The Pride of the Rocks," had a residence at 195 Kent Street in North Sydney, NSW, Australia. Russell was booked to fight Sam McVea at Wonderland in Paris but was taken ill in April and placed in hospital diagnosed with rheumatic fever. He passed away May 17, 1910. He was survived by his parents and three brothers and three sisters.
