Lally was reportedly a fighter as well. After quitting boxing he was an amateur baseball shortshop. After leaving baseball, he worked as an umpire, advancing from the Southern League to the then major league American Association. Lally then umpired in the National League in 1891 and 1894. Lally then returned to boxing, where he worked as a referee until 1917.
