After a career as a Professor of Spanish and Academic Vice President in the community college system, Toby Tamarkin embarked on her career as a boxing judge.
Starting in the amateurs, she worked her way up from rookie to officiating at regional and national Golden Gloves championships. Along the way she caught the eye of veteran judges, Michael Pernick and Peter Trematerra, who urged her to turn pro. She spent six years “trialling” until she received her license.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she fell in love with boxing as a child while watching the Friday Night Fights with her dad. She and her husband, former Senator Tom Dowd, a timekeeper, are regularly seen at events in South Florida. They make their home in Boca Raton.
