According to a news item in the July 13, 1949 edition of the Sporting Globe (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia), Val Quirk, 73, died at his home in St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia on Saturday (July 9, 1949). Quirk was the official professional boxing referee at Melbourne Stadium for fifteen years starting in 1915. As an amateur boxer, Quirk reportedly "ruled the roost" in the state of Victoria while boxing in the welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions. He went on to be a referee in amateur bouts before selected to replace Vic Newhouse as the referee at Melbourne Stadium.

According to a family notice in the July 11, 1949 edition of the Argus (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia), Valentine Quirk died at his home in St. Kilda on July 9, 1949. He was survived by his wife, Emma; and children, Val, Leonard, Peggy and Kevin.
