Johnny Harko was born in Dobromeil, Austria and immigrated to the United States at age one. As a professional, he was recognized as the New Hampshire State bantamweight and lightweight champion, as well as the New England featherweight champion. Harko was once referred to by Jack Sharkey as, "the greatest fighter ever to come out of this state (NH)."
After leaving the ring, he worked construction and ran a used automobile dealership before retiring in the 1970s. In 1967, Harko began working with a glass making furnace as a hobby and for the next 10-12 years created countless pieces of "folk" art, which ranged from cobalt blue bottles to a pitcher with a caricature of George Washington. "All of my creations are given to my friends and to people who would appreciate them and find them meaningful," Harko wrote. "So far, I have tried to have each piece, whether it is a vase, pitcher, cornucopia or historical piece slightly different." By the 1980s, Harko's creations had become quite collectible and many sold for high prices at auctions. Harko Glass
