At the start of the 1950s Jack Hassen held the Lightweight Crown, until October 1951, when he defended his title against the fierce aggressive bundle of muscle called Frankie Flannery. He left Hassen sprawled on the canvas of Melbourne, minus his crown.

By May 1953, "Cranky Frankie" had successfully defended the title against Alfie Clay and George Barnes -- both first-rate names to have notched on one's belt. But then he ran into a wall: Pat Ford from Orange, New South Wales, an ex-amateur. Ford, in only his 15th pro bout, proved too good for the Victorian, and stopped him in ten rounds.
