Zeferino Gonzalez began his career with seven wins before fighting to a draw in 1976 against Freddie Washington (2-0), a U.S. Amateur Champion. His biggest win came in 1977 via unanimous decision over an aging Dave Oropeza (52-13-2). In 1979, he lost a unanimous decision to Roberto Duran (68-1), but gave a good showing of himself using his height and reach advantage to land against a charging Duran.
