As an amateur Bjarne Lingaas won the National title 1949 (junior ranks) 1950-51-52-53-54-55 (senior ranks). He was 18 years old when he in 1951 outpointed Ingemar Johansson. He later beat the Finn Pekka Kokkonen,Britain's Ron Redrup and the German Albert Westphal in the amateur ranks.

He won the Light heavyweight silver medal in the European Championships in Milan 1951, losing to Belgian Marcel Limage in the finals.

He was on the European team against the Golden Gloves in 1953 and won both his fights,against Johny Flynn in Chicago and Orville Pitts New York.

He retired in 1955 after 198 fights and became a physical instructor in the Norwegian Army. From 1959 to 1964 he lived in USA where he had 2 pro bouts and worked as a sparring partner for Floyd Patterson prior to the 2nd Johansson- fight. In 1965 Lingaas was back in Norway, again working for Floyd prior to the Tod Herring fight in Sweden.

Retired from pro boxing in 1966. By the mid- 1970's he was Norway's National coach with the special assignment of training the youngest juniors, age 12 to 16.
