Dave Tiberi was a top middleweight contender from the late 80's/early 1990's. He was never regarded as an elite fighter of his era, so when he was scheduled to challenge James Toney for the IBF Middleweight Title, he was largely seen to be a tune up.

However, Tiberi surprised many, and did enough in the eyes of many, to defeat Toney. This prompted United States Senator William Roth of Delaware, to launch an investigation into corruption in the boxing world. It was later found that two judges who scored the fight were unlicensed in the state of New Jersey.

Disheartened and angered by the loss Tiberi never fought again.
