Jason Escalera is related to former WBC super featherweight champion Alfredo Escalera. Escalera trained out of the Union City Boxing Club and won the 2006 NJ Diamond Gloves (178lbs novice) and 2007 NJ Golden Gloves (178lbs open) titles as an amateur. His biggest amateur achievement was knocking out Alan Lawrence, a two-time national champion who was rated no. 7 in the U.S. at the time, in a 2007 NJ Golden Gloves semifinal bout.
