CHRISTY, EX-C.Y.O. BOXER KILLED IN PLANE CRASH

The death of Lt. James P. Christy -- the popular Jimmy Christy, who won the CYO featherweight championship and then went on to the pro ring, was mourned here today after announcement by the War Department that he had been killed in an airplane crash, Feb. 12, outside the continental United States.

Jimmy quit the ring in 1935 after losing a match to Freddie Miller, featherweight champion, and became a student at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. And until 1940, when he began his pilot training, he was connected with the CYO art staff. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, became a flight instructor for a time and then left for overseas duty last September. [Chicago Daily News, February 29, 1944]
