As an amateur, Taylor won consecutive Australian Bantamweight titles (1957, 1959) and at the 1960 Rome Olympics won a bronze medal in that division before turning professional. He was the younger brother of Wally Taylor, also an Australian title-holder as both an amateur and professional.
