Tommy Marks was raised in Long Branch, NJ, where he attended public schools. He became a policeman in Long Branch, on May 30, 1924, on the condition that he end his professional boxing career. Marks received several promotions in the Long Branch police department, ultimately becoming chief of police on November 17, 1942. He became ill in 1955 and then died of a heart attack in Long Branch in 1958.
