According to the 1921-11-17 Lima News Johnny Papke was originally from Superior Wis. and had been based in Cleveland Oh. for the past 10 months. While there he had remained unbeaten and had served as sparring partner for Bryan Downey and Johnny Karr. After his boxing career he became a prominent trainer / manager in Cleveland.

This Johnny Papke apparently has to be distinguished from Billy Papke's younger brother Johnny, who had fought as a lightweight boxer in roughly the same area a few years earlier. 1900 and 1910 census data indicate that Papke's younger brother - who was reported to be living in California in the early 1920s by the New Castle News - was born in 1895.
