Charley McCarthy was perhaps the most-decorated professional boxer of World War I, if not of all-time. According to the October 21, 1943 Tacoma News Tribune (Tacoma, WA, USA), he had been wounded several times duriung WWI. He earned the Croix de Guerre and Cross Militair (France), Belgian War Cross & Albert Medal (Belgium), Mons Star and King George Special Service Medal (Britain), the Distinquished Service Cross and the Congressional Medal of Honor by the United States. (However, his name cannot be located in the list of Medal of Honor recipients for WWI. He may have been known by another name.)

By 1943 he was working for the Boeing Airplane Company in Washington state.

His home was said to have been St. Paul, MN.
