Fred Dyer was a globe-trotting middleweight boxer who spent most of his time as a singer and stage entertainer. He began his boxing career in his native Wales in 1910. By 1914 he was meeting some of the best men of his weight in Great Britain. That same year he went to Australia, where he fought seven times--two with the great middleweight world title claimant, Les Darcy.
In 1916, Dyer came to the United States, where he fought until 1919. His best known opponents in the States were Bryan Downey, Tommy Robson, Panama Joe Gans, Bob McAllister, Pal Reed, and Joe Eagan.
In 1920, Dyer returned to Europe--where he had one fight in France, and several in Great Britain--but was considered "over the hill" by that time.
Amateur Career
Dyer competed in the April 1909 ABA lightweight championships, losing on points to Fred Grace, the eventual winner.
