Sammy "Cappy" Hoffman was charged with the murder of Michael Tenerelli (Mickey Blair), per the Nov. 19, 1941 New York Times. Kehler: Both Mickey Blair and Samuel "Cappy" Hoffman were gangsters. Hoffman was the leader of Atlantic City's Jewish racketeers and also was involved with Philadelphia rackets in conjunction with the leader of that city's Jewish gangsters, Chaim "Harry" or "Nig Rosen" Stromberg. After his boxing career ended, Mickey Blair and his wife operated Atlantic City's largest and most prominent brothel, the Pleasure Bay Inn . As he lay dying, Blair was said to have identified Cappy Hoffman as his assailant. According to the Daily News (New York City), "Both Tenerelli and Hoffman had long police records, the former having been arrested nine times on serious charges without being sentenced. Six times he was arrested on holdup and robbery charges and once on a charge of conspiracy to hold up a disorderly house. The cases never came to trial. Hoffman served four years on a 1930 conviction of possessing narcotics. In the same year he was acquitted of slaying Jerry Daniels, South Jersey gang leader. Other arrests have been on gambling charges, but he was never convicted." Of course, Cappy Hoffman was acquitted of the murder of Mickey Blair. At trial, two key witnesses recanted earlier statements in which they had identified Hoffman as the killer. One of them was Blair's own wife who testified that she did not know who shot her husband nor did she recall telling the police that Hoffman did it. The other witness to change her story was a nurse who attended Blair on his death bed. Did witness intimidation aid Hoffman's cause? Brother of Frankie Blair.
