According to a December 10, 2016 email to BoxRec from his granddaughter Laura:

Joey was not his real name but his brother’s. We believe that the reason he used his elder brother’s name was that he started boxing at below what was the then legal age to box. His real name was Arthur.

He went on to marry and produced three sons: Arthur, who flew Spitfires during the Battle of Britain in WWII; Eric, a doctor; and Norman, who was a businessman and my father.

After his boxing career ended he became a businessman and owned a large pub in Surrey called the Stoneleigh Arms. He was also a keen racegoer, and owned a couple of racehorses; one of which was named Laura Jane after me.

He died in 1975 and my father aways kept his Lonsdale belt displayed beneath a large photo of my grandfather. After my father died, the Lonsdale Belt passed on to my brother Paul, who still has it.
