D.C. Smith was the North Carolina middleweight champion from 1939 to 1941. He was an active member of the U.S. National Guard in World War II. On November 16, 1944, while in Germany, Smith lost his right foot and badly injured his left after stepping on a land mine. Smith recovered at Lawson general hospital in Atlanta, where he was fitted for a prosthetic. "I was lucky to get out alive," Smith said. "Strangely enough, one of the first things that came in my mind when that mine went off was, "There goes my boxing career" and boxing was all I knew." Unable to fight, Smith worked as a promoter and manager in the 1940s and 50s. [1] [2]
