During World War II Leen Sanders and his family were detained at concentration camp Auschwitz. While his wife and two sons aged eight and ten were murdered, as well as his parents and 7 of his siblings, Sanders - being employed as a boxing instructor - survived. Various eye witness accounts exist of Sanders using his position to help other prisoners.
These accounts are by other survivors of The Holocaust who lived in the same concentration camp barracks as Sanders. Recognized as a War Hero in 2018 by The Dutch Boxing Association. In terms of Sanders boxing career he briefly held the Dutch Lightweight Title from 1929 to 1930-and held the Dutch Middleweight Title from 1935 until 1940.
