Jimmy McDonough enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 28, 1940 and served until September 1944. A machine gunner, he hit the beach in Guadalcanal in 1942. There, during the terrible, early bloody months of conflict when things looked the darkest, he was joined by and fought shoulder to shoulder with Sgt. Bassilone, Al Schmidt, Indian Johnny Rivers, and Barney Ross. After Guadalcanal, he saw action in New Guinea, Cape Gloucester and Talasear. TR March 1946 by Harvey Thorne.
