The April 12, 1915 Tacoma Daily Times reported that he was then 24-years-old. He reportedly began his boxing career in Butte, Montana in 1913. (Another source says he had his first bout in Pueblo, Colorado, where he had been born. [2]) He had 12 career bouts by April 1915. He had lost his debut against Rube Smith, but won all the others by knockout.

According to the May 13, 1915 Tacoma Daily Times, he had been working for some years as a steel worker in Colorado, but was then working as a Milwaukee Railroad brakeman out of Deer Lodge.

By June 1916, his manager was Tommy Ryan. June 21, 1916 Tacoma Daily Times
