Gary Cobia started boxing when he was 29, when he had his first amateur bout. He trained at the Gate City Boxing Club in Pocatello, Idaho, where he grew up. He finished his amateur career in Ogden, Utah, fighting out of the Marshall White Center under the direction of Bob Lopez. He won the Super Heavyweight Utah State Golden Gloves in 2003. Cobia turned professional in 2012.
