Amateur Career
From 1939 to 1942 he reached the finals round of the German amateur championships. On 9 August 1942 in Hanover he became Bantamweight champion beating Otto Goetzke in the final].
Durng the war the European championships were held at the end of January 1942 in Breslau (these were annulled by the AIBA in 1946). He fought in the Flyweight division and lost in the first round against the later European championship Paesani of Italy.
On the 10th November 1942 he represented Germany in an international tournament against Switzerland in Basel and fought to a draw.
From 1943 he was a soldier and was taken prisoner by the Americans. He returned home in December 1946 after Nuremberg and continued to box for his old club.
