Biography
Eddie Volk was born in Chicago, but moved to Oregon City, Oregon while an infant. Volk moved to Portland when he was 15 and came under the tutelage of former Pacific Coast Bantamweight champion Billy Mascott, who developed him at the Multnomah Athletic Club. At the time Volk was a student at Washington High School in Portland.
As of May 1935 he was boxing in Chicago. He was scheduled to appear on a show in Portland during a visit home, but the bout was cancelled when Joe Waterman called off the show. Volk was known as an exciting boxer, with a good punch, he had a glass chin which limited how far he could advance in his career though.
His young brother Bobby Volk also boxed in Portland during the mid-to-late 1940s, and was an outstanding military boxer, but had the same limitations as Eddie did as a pro.
Volk started working as a referee and judge in Portland in 1937. He was the referee for the World Welterweight Title bout held in Portland between Don Jordan and Denny Moyer.
