According to the 1910-10-15 Indianapolis Star the Congo Kid was born in Kingston Jamaica in 1886. Since starting his boxing career in Cape Town, South Africa in 1904, he had fought a dozen times in London and San Francisco and in many other places. At the time of the article the Congo Kid - under the management of Louis Farb - was in Indianapolis and challenged all boxers between 130 and 133 lbs.
