Hicks was retired by the Washington State Boxing Commission in 1960, due to a detached retina. He was later re-issued a license in 1968, but retired after fighting to a draw in a comeback bout.
An amateur sensation, Hicks entered the 1956 Olympic Trials riding a 48 fight win streak and was the consensus favorite for the featherweight slot. He was upset by Tabby Lee in the first fight suffering a knockdown in the 2nd round.
