Spider McCallum's listed 21 year career would appear to be legitimate.

He is described by the Pasco (now Tri-City) Herald as a veteran, prior to his 1956 appearance in Kennewick on the undercard of Harry (Kid) Matthews's knockout win over Harley Brashears.

McCallum was a bar owner in Missoula, when he was murdered by David E. Tamietti on February 19, 1969. McCallum's body was found on February 28th, and he was believed to have been killed by a hatchet. Tamietti was arrested March 1st for his murder, and tried for first degree murder later that year, with the first trial ending in a mistrial after a jury failed to reach a verdict. Tamietti pled guilty to second degree murder in November 1970, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Tamietti did not admit to killing McCallum, but however admitted that he knew of his death, and had robbed McCallum's house and forged checks in McCallum's name.
