Mack whose real name was Frederick McLean, was sentenced to seven to nineteen years in prison in January 1925, for killing Mrs. W.F. Abbott during a drunken party. McLean wounded several other people at the party, and attempted suicide. McLean served the minimum seven years of his sentence for 2nd degree murder. Mack resumed his boxing career as Sandy McLean after his release. Attempts were made to deport McLean, a native of Scotland, who never had became a citizen. McLean was granted a pardon by the State Board of Pardons in Pennsylvania 1935, staving off attempts at deporting him. McLean had become involved in evangelistic movements around Lancaster at this point.
