O'Neill had a long criminal history. He was sentenced on May 24, 1932 to serve five-to-ten years for automobile theft and burglary. While awaiting a hearing, he and four other inmates, broke free from jail. Three escapees were captured near York, Pennsylvania, while O'Neill and Calvin Tyson evaded capture and fled to Maryland. The two were later arrested in Pikesville, Maryland and charged with burglarizing a clothing store and stealing an automobile. While in Pikesville awaiting trial O'Neill and Tyson attacked an aged jail turnkey and beat him to death and escaped. O'Neill was arrested in Towson, Maryland, while Tyson remained free for three years and after conviction received a life sentence. O'Neill received five years in Maryland, and after serving that sentence was returned to Pennsylvania to serve time for his crimes there.
