Allen Franks was of African-American and American Indian heritage. Local newspapers published during his very early boxing career state that he was from Everett, Washington. Later, he is reported to be from the nearby Tulalip Indian Reservation. Allen Franks birth certificate identified his father John Franks as being Negro and 1/8 Indian. Both Franks' father and mother were identified as members of the Swinomish Tribe on Indian Census Rolls.

He had an amateur boxing career in the Puget Sound area during early 1925 -- as documented by the Everett Daily Herald newspaper.
