Amateur career
Bateson was a member of the Team GB squad. He won a bronze medal at the European Amateur Boxing Championships in 2013 (light flyweight). He won ABA Senior titles in 2012 (light flyweight) - defeating Jack Malik in the final - and 2013 (flyweight) - defeating Joel Spragg in the final. He also reached the final in 2014 - losing in the final to Charlie Edwards. He also featured for the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing. As a Junior, Bateson won Gold at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games and won titles at the English Junior & Youth Nationals (2011) and Great Britain Youth Championships (2011). He also featured at the European Youth Championships (2011) and AIBA Youth World Championships (2012). As a senior, Bateson has also featured at the European Union Championships (2014) and World Championships (2013).
