As an amateur Barton represented Scotland and was been part of their squads in three European Championships, one Commonwealth Games and one AIBA World Championships, as both a youth and a senior. Barton has twice been Scottish national champion, as both a youth and a senior, as well as having won the Great Britain youth championships and Three Nations. Barton also won the Elite Senior National Championships.

Trained by former pro fighter Henry Wharton he signed a promotional deal with Frank Warren in 2019.

In 2021 Barton was sentenced to 13 months in jail after punching a women in a pub and knocking her unconscious.
