After developing Mafatau's new style, Lemerick entered him into one of the most competitive divisions in amateur boxing in the American Boxing Federation State Championships. Mafatau lost five fights by decision and gained valuable experience.

Mafatau won the next two ABF tournaments and four straight Golden Gloves, including be named outstanding open fighter of 2000.

One of his defining moments as a fighter came when he knocked out American Gladiator star Cobra in a two-round cage match. Mafatau knocked him out during the first round after spending only 3 minutes and 24 seconds in the ring.

After winning his fourth Golden Glove, Mafatau turned pro last December and is 5-0, all first-round knockouts.
