Freddie Bonillas was the brother of fellow boxers Artie Bonillas, Billy Bonillas, Gene Bonillas, Teddy Bonillas, Tiny Bonillas and Tony Bonillas.

According to an obituary found in the May 12, 1939 edition of the Los Banos Enterprise, Fred Bonillas, 41, died suddenly on Tuesday (May 9, 1939). Bonillas was walking near the Southern Pacific depot in Los Banos in the afternoon when becoming ill. He laid down at the base of a palm tree where he was found by a station agent. After being summoned, the local police chief found that Bonillas had passed away.
