Jan Antoni Szczepański won the gold medal in the lightweight division (– 60 kg) at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. He grew up in Tomaszów Mazowiecki and boxed for KS Pilica Tomaszów Mazowiecki (1956-1959) and Legia Warsaw (1959-1975). He won medals at the Polish championships and won the 1971 European championship in Madrid at lightweight. For outstanding sports achievements he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Golden Cross of Merit (twice).
