In his early 1933 series of articles for the Bremerton Daily News Searchlight newspaper, entitled "A Decade in the Ring," Bud Ridley wrote in the final entry that, after hanging up the gloves himself, he opened a gym in the Los Angeles suburb of Maywood, California, where he "started a green awkward kid by the name of Jim Ferren" (a heavyweight).
