According to The Post Star, December 21, 1945, Hughes returned home from Naval Service where he had been since October 7, 1943. His rank at discharge was Machinist's Mate 3rd Class. He had been overseas since leaving Camp Peary, VA where he was with the Navy Construction Battalion. He won the Lightweight SeaBee Championship of the 14th Naval District by winning six bouts in Hawaii and one in California. Hughes allegedly had 600 or so bouts during his career which began with a decision in Danby, VT.
