Career Review

Alcides Morales came to South Florida in 1980 during the Mariel Boatlift from Cuba.

Morales reportedly was a member of the Cuban National Boxing Team and had compiled an amateur boxing record of 119-7 (86 knockouts).

Morales turned professional on Miami Beach and after only 4 fights became a fan favorite. Morales was matched with prospect Steve Whetsone, and in an exciting match, Morales battered and stopped Whetstone in the 8th round.

Morales was now undefeated. He was a classy combination-boxer, with lightning fast hands and crisp punching power. According to an article in the Miami Herald, Morales felt he was being underpaid, and said he'd rather not box at all, then not to get the money he was worth.

Morales stayed out of the ring for almost 2 years. When he returned, he was no longer the promising prospect of years earlier. After compiling a career log of 10-1, Morales faded from the boxing scene, never to fight again.
