Corpuz began boxing in 1928, under the direction of Rich Palmer at the University of Washington. After two years at Washington, Corpuz transferred to the University of Idaho, where he continued to box. Corpuz returned to the University of Washington, and in 1934, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and Mines.
