Torrance set the world's record for shot put twice in 1934 before taking up boxing. Torrance also participated in basketball and football at Louisiana State University. Torrance later played in the National Football League for the Chicago Bears in 1939 and 1940 as a Tackle. Torrance won an NFL championship and made the pro bowl as a member of the 1940 Bears. Torrance's shot put world record would outlast his sports career, as would not be surpassed until 1948. Torrance was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1961.
