Eiler suffered an amputation of a leg, following an automobile accident in 1940. Three years later he lost his other leg, when gangrene set in. Friends of Eiler set him up with a gym, where he trained fighters, until the advent of TV dried up any hope of success as a trainer. Eiler was 48 years old at the time of his death.
