An ex-convict, according to the Tacoma Times newspaper (Tacoma, WA, USA), March 2, 1932, Jack Kentworth was accused of murdering fellow Portland boxer Johnny Hansen. On July 2, 1932, Kentworth pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Kentworth was mentioned in an April 12, 1936 Portland Oregonian article about a magazine being produced by prisoners at the Oregon State Penitentiary. Kentworth was the most prolific contributor to that publication.

According to the June 30, 1955 Oregon Statesman, inmate and future boxer Jack Kentworth was discovered by Salem promoter Harry Plant while working on boxing shows at the Salem Penitentiary.

The March 3, 1932 edition of the same newspaper reported that Kentworth had been released from prison on March 2, 1929. Kentworth had served two years for burglary committed in Umatilla County.

It was believed that Kentworth was not his real name, and that he was connected with a prominent family in the East. Reportedly upon his release from prison, he had been given a new name.
