Jack McGowan was Australian lightweight champion in June 1901 and again on 24 May 1909. He was the first fighter to win three Australian titles at different weights. He won the third of these in the gold rush town of Kalgoolie in Western Australia. He died, age 39, while sparring July 17, 1912 with R. E. Fanning at Melbourne.
