Pvt. Dave Patterson of Camp Lee, Virginia, was one of the best heavyweight prospects around Pittsburgh until called by Uncle Sam. Patterson won eight amateur titles in his first year in the ring, including the 1941 junior national heavyweight crown in Philadelphia. He lost only one bout out of 89 as an amateur, scoring 72 knockouts. His brother, Al, was also a pro.

Dave was a pupil of Billy Thompson and Hal Turner, Pittsburgh trainers who developed many good boys.
