Newsboy Brown was ranked the second-best bantamweight boxer in the world for 1931 in The Ring magazine's Annual Ratings for 1931, and the fourth-best in January 1932 by the National Boxing Association.

Brown defeated five World Champions: Baby Arizmendi, Al Brown, Midget Wolgast, Izzy Schwartz and Frankie Genaro. He fought World Flyweight Champion Fidel LaBarba twice and drew with him both times. He also fought and defeated a host of world class ranked fighters like Speedy Dado, Young Tommy, Chris Pineda, Young Nationalista, Kid Pancho, Marty Gold, Alex Burlie, Ernie Hood, Harry Goldstein, Pablo Dano, Johnny Vacca, Harold Mayberry and Johnny McCoy.
